ROSY BEYELSCHMIDT
BIO
Born in Cologne - lives and works in Cologne • 1968-1969 stays and gallery internships in England. After an inspiring conversation with Prof. Bazon Brock, I paused my studies at the Cologne University of Applied Sciences for Free Art, which I had started in 1970, for a year to travel to the USA for a film project about „Black Elk“ (Wichasha Wakan). I financed my stay once again through gallery internships. I received valuable support from Prof. Bruce Breland, Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, PA. This allowed me to survive in the USA for two years, dedicating myself to my project.
In 1973, back in Cologne; still mentally drained from the 'experiences' of my film project and facing financial difficulties, I was offered a job at the Kölnischer Kunstverein. What was initially planned as a short episode lasted until 1982. Around 9 years as a curatorial assistant - many international exhibitions - there wasn't a single day I would want to miss, yet I still wanted to return - back to start! What was once started has been completed - master's student.
Alongside my artistic work, I began a master's program in 1989 with a focus on Philosophy / German Studies / Art History at the University of Cologne. In parallel, from 1989 to 1990, I worked for "Kanal 4 (Open Channels / People and Technology · Development of Models for Non-Profit Media Production for the State of North Rhine-Westphalia)." Using the resources of university networks, I founded 1992(-1994) the art network „ArtEx“ (Bulletin Board Service in FidoNet) and engaged in exchanges with „CyberCafe London/irational.org (Heath Bunting),“ among others. In 1994(-2004), I became a member of the DAX Group (Digital Art Exchange / Founder Prof. Bruce Breland, Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, PA). Despite the many projects of the DAX members, such as John Heric (artist/musician) or Matthew Wrbican (Andy Warhol Museum, Pittsburgh), we managed, through energy and friendship, to be represented at the ARS Electronica, Linz, in 1996 and to publish the project „Virtual Africa“ through „Leonardo MIT Press“ in 1997.
